I have owned Norwegian Lundehunds since 1993, when we obtained our first one, Gate City Sunniva from Darcy Gort in Sequim, WA. But I first heard of Lundehunds around 1974 when I saw a photo of a white 'Puffin Hound 'and her pup in a Dog Atlas. They were so adorable that I kept that picture in my mind for years, wondering what a Puffinhound was and looking for them in other dog books. I finally found out that they were Lundehunds around 1989 when the Milne family's Lundehunds of Everett/Marysville, WA were written up in our local paper. When my old Sheltie passed away in 1992, I was looking for a dog to replace her and came across the advertisement that Darcy had put out for her very first litter. We fell in love with Sunny, and with Lundehunds in general, immediately.
I breed and show Lundehunds under the kennel name of Midnattssol Kennels. I have had three champions: ARBA & NLCA CH. Gate City Sunniva, Prairie Gold Dorthea, and Dawns Midnattsol Arnbjorn (who also won Best in Show). My three champions have all passed on to that rainbow in the sky. I am no longer involved with shwoing dogs.
Professionally, I am a retired small animal veterinarian who practiced in western Washington for 37 years, since graduating Washington State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1979.
A western Washington State native, I live in the small town of Lake Forest Park. Lundehunds are my pets and live in the house. I keep only a few dogs at a time and have 1-3 litters a year. Their health is monitored closely and their serum proteins are tested every three months. All pups are vet checked and have received wormings, micro-chips and appropriate vaccinations. Prospective puppy owners are scrutinized well and expected to provide references and extensive information on their home, family and previous dog owning experience.
There are numerous Lundies in the western Washington area as there have been four other breeders in the area at times over the past twenty years. Since 1995, I have had an annual Lundefest every summer where all the local dogs and owners get together for a picnic and fun games. I look forward to the Fest as much as other Lundie owners. (For more info see section on the Lundefest).
